Cantaloupe

Bite into a fragrant slice of August cantaloupe, and there’s no wonder it’s is the most popular melon in America. It’s sweet, refreshing and gets an A+ rating on the good-for-you scale. Local melons are here like a breath offresh, summer air.

Some tips for choosing a ripe melon:  Tap the melon with the palm of your hand to hear a hollow sound.
Choose a melon that seems heavy for its size.
The end opposite where the stem once was should be slightly soft.
You should be able to smell the fruit’s sweetness subtly shining through. Cantaloupe is so fragrant that you will be able to test for its aroma of ripeness even if you purchase it cut, packaged in plastic.
