Grilled Crab Sandwiches

Grilled Crab SandwichesTake Me Out To the Ball Game

The professional baseball season started this week. If you had asked me five years ago if I was excited or even cared about Opening Day of the baseball season, I would have looked at you like you had lost your ever-lovin’ mind. Baseball? Zzzzzzzz…

But, see, that was before. A perfect storm to change my attitude was a-brewin’.

In 2010, my boys started little league. It was as cute to watch as it was painful, and it bore no resemblance whatsoever to the actual game of baseball, except sometimes they hit the ball and ran to first base. At this level, baseball is an excuse to have snacks. And if you learn the basics of the game along the way, consider yourself lucky.

That Fall, the Giants won the World Series for the first time and, I admit, I got knee deep in the hoopla. (Quick! Name that band…)

The following year, the boys’ playing actually improved, and they figured out some of the finer points of the game. As parents, my husband and I found ourselves getting more and more involved as we tried to teach the boys how to play better baseball.

Last year everything came to a head. The boys were fascinated by Major League Baseball, especially the Giants. And my husband and I found ourselves purposely checking to see if baseball was on TV because we wanted to watch the game, not because it was screwing up whatever DVR programming I had going on. We could actually name the starting lineup—crazy! While the Giants made their run to win yet another World Series our boys were showing some increased talent and a serious passion for playing baseball.

Now that it is April, the little league season is in full swing. (It’s okay, you can groan.) On any day of the week, I can be found sitting in a fold-up chair, on the third base line, the possibility of losing my lunch hinging on the pitching ability of an 8-year-old. I never thought this would be me, but I love it!

To celebrate Opening Day, I have attached the family recipe for Grilled Crab Sandwiches. It’s my favorite thing to eat at AT&T Park, and anywhere else really.

Note: there are no real specific quantities listed. I’ve never really had a recipe for it. I just throw everything together and mix to taste.

Grilled Crab Sandwiches

Ingredients
Dungeness Crab Meat
Mayonnaise
Celery, diced
Lemon juice
Salt
Pepper
Monterey Jack cheese, optional
Sliced tomatoes, optional
Sourdough Baguette, sliced like a deli roll OR Sourdough Deli Roll

Directions
Mix the crab and the next four ingredients together in a bowl. Taste to see what needs to be added.

Butter the inside of the roll or baguette. Place the roll on a griddle or under the broiler until butter has melted and the bread is golden brown.

Place the cheese and/or tomatoes on the warm bread (if using). Spread the crab mixture on top and enjoy!
