Old FashionedWondering what to do for Father’s Day? How about making a kit to improve his cocktail game?

We did an informal poll of our staff, and discovered that two favorite “dad cocktails” were the Old Fashioned and the Martini. We have great recommendations for some really nice bottles that will turn Dad’s classic into something truly delicious. See the recipes below for our staff picks to help you put together a kit that includes everything he needs.

Whatever your dad’s favorite cocktail is, you can always come by the store and talk with the extremely knowledgeable folks in our Wine & Spirits department. They can make fantastic recommendations for any cocktail.

Here are recipes for the Old Fashioned and both a Classic Gin Martini and a Vodka Martini with the list of recommended spirits and mixers.

The Old Fashioned
A simple and most delicious classic recipe.
We recommend using Booker’s Kentucky Bourbon or R1 Whiskey (Rye-One)
Fee Brothers Bitters
Stirrings Simple Syrup

Ingredients
2 oz. bourbon or rye whiskey
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1/4 oz. 2:1 rich simple syrup (or one sugar cube if preferred)
orange peel

Directions
In an Old Fashioned glass, add the syrup, bitters and orange peel. Use a muddler to gently press the orange peel to release the citrus oils. Add the whiskey and stir. Add ice cubes and stir again.

Classic Gin Martini
Staff picks for the Martini are St. George Spirit’s Gin—either their Terroir Gin, Botanivore Gin—or you could go for the blue with Bombay Sapphire Gin
La Quintinye Vermouth

Ingredients
2 oz. gin or vodka
1 oz. dry vermouth
2 dashes orange bitters
lemon twist or cocktail olive for garnish

Directions
In a mixing glass, stir ingredients briskly with ice, then strain into a chilled martini glass. Twist a small strip of lemon peel over the drink, and drop it in for garnish—or use a cocktail olive.

Vodka Martini
Staff favorites are Belvedere Vodka and Lillet Blanc

Ingredients
2 oz Belvedere Vodka
1/4 oz Lillet Blanc
pink grapefruit twist for garnish

Directions
Stir over ice and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a pink grapefruit twist.
