Two years ago, Paul and Laura Magu took over hallowed territory in Lafayette—the former home of Chevalier—and put their own bistro spin on the space. The French-trained Paul had cooked in some of San Francisco’s top restaurants before deciding he wanted his own kitchen.

Dying to try noted chef Dominique Crenn’s cooking but thinking her two-Michelin-star Atelier Crenn might be too spendy? Head to her trendy new wine bar next door. The vibe is just as elegant and the bites divine. We enjoyed the Alsatian flatbread with Comté cheese, fromage blanc and bacon and the rare pink scallop dressed with horseradish, lime and white sturgeon caviar.
