KATZ & Company Oil and Vinegar

Each month we feature one of our favorite vendors; we have a number of longstanding relationships with many wonderful providers and a few new favorites that we’d like you to get to know.

For May, we’re showcasing KATZ & Company Oil and Vinegar.

Albert and Kim Katz run this family-owned business in Suisun Valley.

It all began in a classroom at Cal, where Albert and Kim met and fell in love. There were a few life events along the way–they married, opened a restaurant

where Albert was the chef and had a couple of kids. But a trip to Italy was a catalyst; the couple fell in love all over again, but this time it was with olive oil.

In the late 90s, they hooked up with their farmer friend, Jim, and together the trio learned how to grow Tuscan and Italian varietal olive trees in California. Now, more than a decade later, they have mature groves that are CCOF certified organic in the agriculturally rich Suisun Valley. Their olive oil-making skills have also been well honed, and in 2011 they received the first ever “Best of the Best” Gold Medal at the Yolo County Fair.

Jim is also a wine maker, so the next step was learning how to make truly authentic vinegar using his viniculture expertise. Albert had always wanted to try his hand at making an agrodolce-style elixir (sweet and sour), and after many trials, the first successful barrel of Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc Vinegar was born.

The KATZ lineup now includes five distinct vinegar varietals. KATZ oils and vinegars are used in many Bay Area restaurants, including Chez Panisse, which inspired the menus at their restaurant.

What’s next for this team? A tasting room near their olive groves in Suisun. Albert and Kim want to meet the many happy customers who share their love of oil and vinegar.
