Mushroom Manhattan

Mushroom Manhattan cocktail with a citrus twist

The Mushroom Manhattan cocktail may sound, well, unlikely. But, we guarantee the woodsy umami of the mushroom pairs beautifully with the oaky tobacco-reminiscent whiskey flavors. Add the sweetness of vermouth and you have a winning combination. The cocktail also has a dash (or two) of Angostura bitters lending it citrus overtones.

Mushroom cocktails are trending along with a culinary leaning towards umami flavors. Try one, and then experiment with different mushroom varieties. This makes for a delightful fall sipper.

Mushroom Manhattan Cocktail Recipe
Adapted from Monterey Mushrooms
Yields one cocktail

Ingredients
Ice
2 parts (2 ounces) mushroom-infused whiskey, we recommend Bulleit
1 part (one ounce) sweet vermouth
1 dash Angostura bitters
Orange twist

Directions
Do ahead: infuse your whiskey
Infused the whiskey with dried mushrooms for at least 24 hours. If you like, you can infuse an entire bottle for future use—or just enough to make one cocktail.

Mix the cocktail
Place ice in a cocktail shaker. Add the whiskey, vermouth, and bitters. Rub the orange peel around the rim of the cocktail glass. Strain the drink into the glass.

For the garnish, add an orange twist, or even 2-3 marinated mushrooms.
