Oakland Earth Day is Saturday, April 22nd

Oakland Earth DayJoin your neighbors to make our city clean and green on Oakland Earth Day! Groups and individuals of all ages and abilities are invited to join cleanup and restoration projects at creeks, parks, and neighborhood sites throughout Oakland. All tools are provided.

Oakland Earth Day is the City’s largest community volunteer event. Volunteers may choose from a variety of activities and sites, including litter pickup, graffiti removal, weeding, planting, and habitat restoration in parks, creeks, and streets throughout Oakland.

Earth Day marks the anniversary of what many consider to be the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. According to Earth Day Network, “more than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.”

In 2016 over 2,300 volunteers pitched in more than 7,800 hours at ninety-one sites across Oakland. Volunteers removed more than 215 cubic yards of trash and more than 400 cubic yards of weeds and green waste. And in total, the trash and green waste removed was enough to fill about 4,000 35-gallon garbage bags!
