Bourbon for Father

What are you getting dad for Father’s Day this Sunday?
We are thinking about a nice, smooth bottle of bourbon. Because, well, what does dad really want? We asked our in-house bourbon expert and came up with a list of three recommendations in three different price ranges.

So, depending upon how deep your pockets are (or how much dad really loves a good bottle of bourbon) you can know he will get something delicious.

Happy Father’s Day to all the great dads out there!

Yellowstone Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
$34.00 per 750 ml. bottle
Yellowstone is one of the older bourbon brands, dating back to 1872, the year its namesake national park was founded.

This is an easy-drinking bourbon with a well-balanced flavor profile is ages 7 years. It is a masterful fusion of flavors from 7th generation distillers, Paul and Steve Beam. It features a hand-picked blend of sweet, spicy, and smoky Bourbons, each selected to give this exclusive whiskey a taste that celebrates its deep, family origins.

Tasting Notes
Nose
Sweeter flavors like vanilla and caramel are most prevalent, but the nose isn’t cloying, thanks to a solid oak bass note. After a few minutes in the glass, black cherry and a hint of toast make an appearance.

Taste
Caramel and oak predominate on the palate, with a somewhat oily mouthfeel.

Finish
Warm allspice followed by more caramel. Wood lingers on the finish.

101 Proof

Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
$59.99 per 750 ml bottle
This 115 proof bourbon celebrates Old Forester’s continued distillation during Prohibition. For 13 years, the production, transport, and sale of alcohol were strictly prohibited. However, Old Forester was granted a permit to continue distilling on Louisville’s Whiskey Row. The 115 proof expression represents a barrel sample that company president Owsley Brown I would have batched at the beginning of Prohibition. Winner of the 2017 International Whisky Competition.

Tasting Notes
Nose
An intense medley of cherry preserves, drippy caramel, dark chocolate, thickened maple syrup and seasoned oak spiciness.

Taste
Dark caramel coats layers of malt nuttiness and sweet graham cracker all warmed by green peppercorn and coriander spice brightened with a hint of cedar.

Finish
Tart apple crispness gives way to a long smoky finish full of toasted marshmallow, chocolate and graham cracker sweetness.

115 Proof

Joseph Magnus Straight Bourbon Whiskey
$129.99 per 750 ml. bottle
Joseph Magnus Bourbon is a marriage of straight bourbon whiskey aged in white oak and finished in Oloroso sherry, Pedro Ximénez and Cognac casks. Winner of multiple awards such as a double gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Tasting Notes
Nose
The ochre-hued Joseph Magnus offers a rich array of aromas, focusing on roasted nuts, coffee, dried fruits, and incense. Subtle notes of furniture polish give it quite a bit of depth and many layers of intrigue.

Taste
The palate doesn’t let you down, offering a relatively racy attack that speaks first of citrus, chocolate, stone fruits, and vanilla. As it develops in the glass, the bourbon takes on more wine-forward notes, which meld interestingly with the darker coffee notes and the sweeter vanilla and caramel characteristics that bubble up after some air time.

Finish
The lingering, warm finish echoes barrel char from the original time in cask, giving the rich and somewhat oily whiskey a relatively traditional bourbonesque exit.
