Celebrating the Solstice

Celebrating the SolsticeThe summer solstice is the 21st. How are you planning to enjoy the longest day of the year? Will you stay out late and listen to music as the sun sets? Or perhaps take a sunset sail over the Bay?

Here are two very different suggestions for celebrating the solstice.

Garden of Memory
Thursday, June 21st from 5 PM to 9 PM to celebrate the solstice at The Chapel of the Chimes just at the top of Piedmont Avenue.

At this popular solstice concert, the program features simultaneous performances in different parts of the building by Bay Area composers, musicians, and other performers presenting a variety of acoustic and electronic music, installations, and interactive events; the audience is free to move throughout the building during the performances.

Garden of Memory offers a unique and personal musical experience to every listener as he or she moves freely through this Oakland Historic Landmark building. Drawing crowds of over two thousand people each year (including a large number of children), Garden of Memory has become a favorite summer solstice celebration for Bay Area audiences.

Tickets are always available at the door throughout the event. More information can be found at the Garden of Memory website and at Brown Paper Tickets.

The Chapel of the Chimes is located at 4499 Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, CA

Summer Solstice Sunset Sail on the San Francisco Bay
by SF Bay Adventures

Thursday, June 21st from 7:15 to 9:30 PM
Step aboard the Schooner Freda B in downtown Sausalito and be part of a centuries-old nautical tradition as the crew raises sails and sets out onto the Bay. Sights we’ll often see include Alcatraz, Angel Island, the Marin Headlands, Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge and the San Francisco Skyline. But the best part is that you’ll see these iconic landmarks from the deck of a traditionally-rigged sailboat, where you can purchase a drink from the cash bar and watch as the sun slowly sets in the West.
