Jazz This Weekend

Jazz This WeekendAre you missing live jazz performances? Here are two local arts venues that are offering free or low-cost ways to get the feeling of a live event this weekend.

SF Jazz Fridays at Five
This week’s performance is John Scofield & Lettuce
SFJazz has maintained a long relationship with John Scofield, and this Friday’s concert is presented in tribute to this artist who ranks among the most influential jazz guitarists of the last four decades, and would have been performing in June as half of a duo with bass giant Dave Holland during the 38th San Francisco Jazz Festival.

Similarly, Scofield and the all-star funk juggernaut Lettuce have had a lengthy connection built on a deep and abiding love of soul. The guitarist appeared as a special guest on the band’s 2002 debut, and in addition to drummer Adam Deitch lending his monstrous grooves to tours and recordings with Scofield, they’ve rejoined forces over the years, never better exemplified than in this incendiary set recorded in March, 2019.

The Freight & Salvage presents Freight at Home
This week’s performance is Clairdee

My mission is to engage, uplift, and build community through music, creating a narrative that inspires beyond the stage.
—Clairdee

No less than the illustrious Nancy Wilson has said of the soulful and jazzy force of interpretive nature called Clairdee, “In the tradition of all great vocalists, she infuses each song with her own unique style while always remaining true to the song itself.” That dead-on assessment applies to her studio albums and live performances—rich and multi-faceted. Aside from creating joyful renditions of great vocal soul-jazz, Clairdee takes the opportunity to fill her growing fan base in on a wide multitude of influences.

Heralded for her inventive artistry and magnetic stage presence, Clairdee’s lustrous voice and expressive delivery hearken back to a time when jazz, pop, and rhythm and blues often blended seamlessly together. Combining scene-stealing charisma with a sincere belief in the transformative power of music, Clairdee presents a repertoire of American Standards set to state-of-the-art arrangements that are equally smart and entertaining.
